"I wish republicans could afford to back their cause with a fancy parade.."

I wish republicans could afford to back their cause with a fancy parade to help brain wash the masses and who says that republicans don't know how to party, in France they have Bastille day every year. Maybe we could have a Cromwell day or something? Its 300 years this year since the first sucessful steam engine was built and put to work in dudley, this invention was to change the world while the inventor is forgotten by most, what other great Britains are there? But people would rather celebrate a family that hords vast wealth while poor people suffer.

    • Anthony Adshead Mick when you have walked ten miles in their shoes and still not managed to get out of the gutter I will take that comment seriously, just because you are clever enough to have made it don't expect everyone else to be able to do the same, for people who had a life with the cards stacked agaist them its not that easy, there are a lot of people out their who have had their spirit broken.

    • Joel Zumokuta Hall I don't think Cromwell would be the best to commemorate, he wasn't exactly a popular leader, hence the restoration.

Actually, Joel, despite being a dictator, Cromwell's personal political beliefs were much more libertarian than many in his government...He was not personally against music, theatre or celebration and held a much more lively court than manyrealise...He had to keep the hard-line Puritans in line though and this led to wave of religious fundamentalism that brought his regime into such ill repute...without that to contend with, he might actually have stood a chance of founding a stable British Republic...
